This is a story about a boy who receives a box with the words The Meaning of Life: for Jeremy Fink to open on his 13th birthday. The keys to open it, however, are not there. He and his friend Lizzy start off to find the keys.

Jeremy's father died a couple years ago, and Jeremy was troubled with the loss of his father at such a young age. Through the grieving period Jeremy is left with a box from his father before his death that is meant for Jeremy to open on his birthday. Jeremy being the quirky and hard nosed kid he is, sets out on a mission to find the four keys that will unlock this box.

For Jeremy Fink to open on his 13th birthday" written across the top. Even stranger than the cryptic message and the security system is the fact that the box is from Jeremy's father, who was killed in a car accident five years earlier.
