Old School Sean - The MINIX operating system

Most books on operating systems are strong on theory and weak on practice. The design of MINIX 3 was inspired by the observation that operating systems.

Instead, Linux was created. That has become quite popular, very large, and complicated. MINIX, on the other hand, has remained small and suitable for instruction and example. The book has been revised to include updates in MINIX, which started out as a v 7 unix clone for a floppy-disk only It is now aimed at , , and pentium machines and is based on the international posix standard instead of on v7.

Andrew Tanenbaum , Albert Woodhull. The definitive, up-to-date introduction to operating systems: Core principles plus hands-on examples with the new MINIX 3 operating system The world's best-selling introductory operating systems text has been thoroughly updated to reflect the latest advances in OS design and implementation. Offering an optimal balance of theory and practice, 'Operating systems: Design and Implementation, 3rd Edition' remains the best resource for anyone seeking a deep understanding of how operating work. This edition includes MINIX 3, more compact, more reliable, better suited for embedded applications-and, above all, even easier to each and learn from. New to this edition: - Newly-released, significantly-improved MINIX 3 operating system on CD-ROM: giving students hands-on experience in modifying and rebuilding a contemporary operating system - Expanded and reorganized coverage of processes and communication - Revised and enhanced coverage of CPU scheduling, deadlocks, file system reliability, and security - Includes more than end of chapter problems.

What is the most used operating system? You might say Windows and then you might remember all those servers and opt for Linux, but either way you would be wrong. And no, it isn't OSX or Android. It is an operating system called Minix, created for educational purposes by Andrew Tanenbaum in the s, which is currently running on all the Intel machines you can think of. This is a strange story that spans quite a few years. Back in the early days of microcomputer, finding an operating system was a real problem. A lot of people wanted to use Unix, but it too was commercial and had a restrictive licence and subject to all sort of legal actions.

From one of America's leading authors of computer science books comes complete coverage of operating systems, plus all the design and implementation issues with a complete operating system--MINIX.
