Romeo and Juliet is set in Verona, Italy, where there is an ongoing feud between the Montague and Capulet families. The play opens with servants from both houses engaged in a street brawl that eventually draws in the family patriarchs and the city officials, including Prince Escalus. The Prince ends the conflict by issuing a decree that prohibits any further fighting at the risk of great punishment. Meanwhile, Romeo , a young man from the Montague house, laments his unrequited love for a woman named Rosaline, who has vowed to remain chaste for the rest of her life. Romeo and his friend Benvolio happen to stumble across a Capulet servant, Peter , who is trying to read a list of invitees to a masked party at the Capulet house that evening. Romeo helps Peter read the list and decides to attend the party because Rosaline will be there. He plans to wear a mask so that he will nobody will recognize him as a Montague.

An age-old vendetta between two powerful families erupts into bloodshed. A group of masked Montagues risk further conflict by gatecrashing a Capulet party. The message fails to reach Romeo, and believing Juliet dead, he takes his life in her tomb. The grieving family agree to end their feud. Romeo and Juliet begins as the Chorus introduces two feuding families of Verona: the Capulets and the Montagues.

These families have been fighting for quite some time, and the Prince declares that their next public brawl will be punished by death. Romeo reveals that he is in love with a woman named Rosaline, but she has chosen to live a life of chastity. At the party, Romeo locks eyes with a young woman named Juliet. They instantly fall in love, but they do not realize that their families are mortal enemies. She returns his sentiments and the two decide to marry.

The storied play of Romeo and Juliet begins in Verona with the hatred of two Royal families, the Capulets and Montagues. Their children, Romeo and Juliet, meet without knowing each of the other's families and fall inlove on first sight. As others begin getting suspicious, the two start to sneek around. As the minutes and hours pass along the two's romance strengthens, leaving them afraid, but brave for what will come. The two seek help from friends and set a date for their marriage. The meeting ends horribly with Mercutio's death at the hands of Tybalt leaving Romeo no choice but to fight him to the death.

It has been referred to as the greatest love story of all time, or perhaps the most tragic. Romeo and Juliet serves to satisfy both anyway, which for a play has obviously stuck around for a very long time, which points to how good a book can turn out to be centuries after its author graced our good planet. In Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare employs several dramatic techniques that have garnered praise from critics; most notably the abrupt shifts from comedy to tragedy. Romeo, a Montague is infatuated with Rosaline, a niece of Capulet. Romeo is banished by the prince from Verona for violating his edict but consummates his secret marriage.
