Stone Illustrated. Liveright Publishing. Everybody knows that the easiest way to boost the sales of a book is to put a particular familiar word in its title. Stone is a professor and former dean at the University of Chicago, and his title is a bit of a tease. The first half is a mad dash through history, starting with the Greeks and ending with Senator Joseph McCarthy, the Stonewall uprising and Anita Bryant. This history proceeds in a seesaw manner, with periods of prudery in reaction to periods of license followed by more prudery, followed by license.
