Sleeper & the Spindle by Neil Gaiman - Book Review

The Sleeper and the Spindle

She wondered how she would feel to be a married woman. It would be the end of her life, she decided, if life was a time of choices. In a week from now, she would have no choices. She would reign over her people. She would have children. Perhaps she would die in childbirth, perhaps she would die as an old woman, or in battle.

Neil Gaiman and Chris Riddell: a partnership fated to succeed from the start. At around sixty pages, this is a short, but highly satisfying spin on the Sleeping Beauty myth. She calls for her armour, she calls for her horse and, aptly accompanied by three dwarfs, she rides out to solve the problem. This is no usual fairy-tale. Gaiman reverses the trend in order to give choice back to characters whose stories have become sugar-coated. Disney is ditched in favour of honouring the dark fairy-tale tradition wherein blood confers control, youth is stolen to reverse the ravages of time, and death is irreversible and unromanticised.

In a beautiful collaboration, New York Times bestselling and Newbery and Carnegie Medal-winning author Neil Gaiman and Kate Greenaway-winning illustrator Chris Riddell have created a thrillingly reimagined fairy tale, "told in a way only Gaiman can" and featuring "stunning metallic artwork" GeekInsider.
