Published on Nov 18, Separated into two main sections, it first brings to life the stories of gods and goddesses such as Zeus, Aphrodite, Apollo, and Athena.

In the ancient Greek world, the Twelve great gods and goddesses of the Greeks were referred to as the Olympian Gods, or the Twelve Olympians. The name of this powerful group of gods comes from Mount Olympus, where the council of 12 met to discuss matters. All 12 Olympians had a home on Mount Olympus and that was where they were most commonly found. Hades , the god of the Underworld, preferred to live there, and Poseidon often chose to stay in his palace under the sea. Most of the other Olympians would be on Mount Olympus year round unless they were travelling.

Ever since humans began to take notice of their surroundings, we have asked why things are the way they are. Modern science has solved many of these mysteries, but the humans who lived long ago had to come up with alternative explanations. Thunderstorms were explained as a sign of the gods' displeasure, and a bountiful harvest was a sign of divine favor. The mythos and legends around each pantheon were created to shed light on a largely hidden, mysterious world. Today, articles, LitCharts, and books help illuminate the values and thought processes of the cultures that birthed these unique stories. Sign In Sign Up. LitCharts Teacher Editions.

Aphrodite was the goddess of love, sex, and beauty. Unsurprisingly for a love goddess, she was said to have emerged from the foam generated when the severed testicles of her father, Uranus, were thrown into the sea by his son, the Titan Cronus. Or is that surprising? Athena was the goddess of reason, wisdom, and war. She famously sprung fully formed from the forehead of Zeus.
