Norman Mailer's 'The Naked and the Dead' - An analysis

Norman Mailer was one of the most original and powerful writers of the twentieth century, but he never wrote a truly great novel. The power of deep-rooted experience, I suspect, would have given rise to a self-sustaining run of novels. Instead, he sacrificed his literary birthright for the pursuit of experiences that he considered literature-worthy, and he paid a high price to replace it. The grandson of a rabbi who struggled in business, the son of a picaresque bookkeeper and an adoring mother, he was a brilliant student and precocious writer. Did he hesitate to reveal stories about his parents? His father, a compulsive gambler, was often in debt, on the edge of legal trouble, and frequently unemployed. Did he not want to write about his days of sheltered timidity?

In the matter of The Naked and the Dead our duty as liberal and educated people is clear. If it comes to a showdown we stand by Norman Mailer. His book is tremendously good, and perhaps better than that. There has been some conjuring up of the ghost of what Henry James called "that Rhadamanthus of English literature - the Young Person. As for the Young Persons, those belonging to what used to be known as the working classes are commonly enlightened very early about elemental things, and the other boys and girls are not nowadays brought up prudish. But in fact "The Naked and the Dead" will only be scavenged for obscene passages by those whose taste or fancy is already for such nourishment.

Hailed as one of the finest novels to come out of the Second World War, The Naked and the Dead received unprecedented critical acclaim upon its publication and has since enjoyed a long and well-deserved tenure in the American canon. This fiftieth anniversary edition features a new introduction created especially for the occasion by Norman Mailer. Written in gritty, journalistic detail, the story follows a platoon of Marines who are stationed on the Japanese-held island of Anopopei. Composed in with the wisdom of a man twice Mailer's age and the raw courage of the young man he was, The Naked and the Dead is representative of the best in twentieth-century American writing. Now that fifty years have gone by since The Naked and the Dead was published in May , I think it might be interesting to talk about it as a best-seller that was the work of an amateur. Of course, as bestsellers go, it was a good book, and the author who began it at the age of twenty-three and completed it fifteen months later had already written more than a quarter of a million words in college and so could be considered a hard-working amateur who loved writing and was prepared in the way of a twenty-four-year-old to fall on his sword in the cause of literature.
