This website is dedicated to the short story and to those interested in reading this delightful art form. Fewer and fewer people these days read short stories. This is unfortunate. Few will ever experience the joy that reading such fine work can give. The goal of this site is to give a nice cross section of short stories in the hope that these short stories will excite people into rediscovering this excellent source of entertainment. If you know the title of the story you are seeking, click on the above button to navigate to a page where you will be able to find the stories we have here listed in alphabetical order. Stories that start with 'The' and 'A' will be listed as if the title starts with the next word.

An example of this can be seen in the quotation above. Here, Dickens succeeds in creating a haunting, supernatural atmosphere by not only suggesting the narrator has 'left the natural world', but also by describing the setting much like a graveyard. This was both a pleasure and a serious challenge: the form of the story is so capacious and diverse that at times we were comparing apples and pears, or at least looking at an unfamiliar fruit and arguing over whether to call it an apple or a pear. Rest assured, though: the challenge is not impossible. An apple is always better than a pear. All five finalists will then be broadcast on successive afternoons on BBC Radio 4 and made available on iPlayer starting on 18 September.
