Lambeth 2020: what is the future of the Anglican Communion?

Like much else that is Anglican, the reality is both less dramatic and also far more complex. Henry VIII did indeed have a significant role in one stage in the development of what, much later, became known as Anglicanism. However, the formative factors are so much broader: some much older and some much later. No one figure or aspect has ever been wholly dominant in the origins and character of Anglicanism. It is rather a particular way in which many different people have shared the love of God as Christians, at different times and in different places.

The history of the Anglican Communion may be attributed mainly to the worldwide spread of British culture associated with the British Empire. Among other things the Church of England spread around the world and, gradually developing autonomy in each region of the world, became the communion as it exists today. The only provinces of the Anglican Communion with a direct and unbroken history stretching back to the pre-Reformation church are to be found in Great Britain and Ireland : the Church of England , the Church in Wales , the Church of Ireland and the Scottish Episcopal Church.

Old Catholics have leaned on full communion ties with Anglican churches to create forms of worship which, although decidedly Catholic, are just as decidedly non-Roman, thus strengthening the sense of Old Catholic identity. Full communion, established by the Bonn Agreement of , although slow in making an impact on the life of the two denominations, provided a favourable context for extended liturgical consultations from the s, resulting in Old Catholic use of Anglican liturgical resources in drafting new liturgies. Mutual relations between the Anglican and Old Catholic churches from the s have been of varying intensity and can be divided into several periods. Even before the First Vatican Council a book by J. Neale on the history of the Church of Utrecht 1 brought to the attention of the Anglican public the existence of an independent Catholic church on the European continent. After and the emergence of the German-speaking Old Catholic churches in reaction to Vatican I, relations with Anglicans went from an optimistic beginning between , through a period of crisis between , of which the most notable incident was the so-called Mathew Affair, 2 then a period of renewed dialogue, which culminated in the Bonn Agreement of

Two alternative solutions are noted but rejected Section E before it is argued that the best way forward is not to focus on bishops in same-sex marriages but to take seriously the impairment of communion arising in relation to all bishops who have rejected Communion teaching on marriage Section F. This approach requires a re-visioning of the Lambeth Conference by the incorporation within it of some form of visible differentiation, as already accepted in principle by Communion Primates. This would both recognise the reality of impaired communion and also seek to gather together as many Anglican bishops as possible. There is therefore a real risk that these failures could mean it will mark the end of the Lambeth Conference as in any sense an effective Instrument of Communion. Dr Ephraim Radner responds to and develops these observations over at Living Church by proposing six resolutions that a smaller gathering of those in communion with one another might pass. There is much to be excited about but there are also signs that major challenges and dangers lie ahead in turning these visions and preparations into a lived reality. At least since GAFCON met in Jerusalem in June and issued its letter to the churches there have been questions as to whether the Lambeth Conference will, as in , fail to gather a significant number of Anglicans from across the Communion because of divisions over sexuality and ecclesiology.
