The Course of Theoretical Physics is a ten-volume series of books covering theoretical physics that was initiated by Lev Landau and written in collaboration with his student Evgeny Lifshitz starting in the late s. Kearsley, and W. The last two volumes were written in the early s. Vladimir Berestetskii and Lev Pitaevskii also contributed to the series. The presentation of material is advanced and typically considered suitable for graduate-level study. The series has been called "renowned" in Science and "celebrated" in American Scientist. This was the first occasion on which the Lenin Prize had been awarded for the teaching of physics.

Statistical Physics, Third Edition, Part 1: Course of Theoretical Physics, Volume 5 is a chapter text that covers some theoretical physics-related topics, including thermodynamics, ideal gases, phase equilibrium, and chemical reactions. This volume deals with the properties of gases, the thermodynamics of a degenerate plasma, liquid crystals, the fluctuation theory of phase transitions, and critical phenomena. Other chapters discuss the topics of solids, symmetry of crystals, and the theory of rreducible representations of space groups as applied to physics of the crystal state. This volume also explores the fluctuation-dissipation theorem; the Fermi and Bose distributions; non-ideal gases; phase equilibrium; and solutions.
